The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), founded in 1929, is the oldest and most widely respected Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States of America. LULAC was created at a time in our country’s history when Hispanics were denied basic civil and human rights, despite contributions to American society. The founders of LULAC created an organization that empowers its members to create and develop opportunities where they are needed most.
As Laredo’s newest charter council with over 75+ members, Webb County LULAC Council #22387, advocates for full access to the political process and equal educational opportunity for all Hispanics within our community and continues to play an effective and active role to this day. Like LULAC councils across the United States we hold voter registration drives, citizenship awareness sessions, sponsor health fairs and tutorial programs, and raise scholarship money for the LULAC National Scholarship Fund. This fund, in conjunction with LNESC (LULAC National Educational Service Centers), has assisted almost 10 percent of the 1.1 million Hispanic students who have gone to college.
Our sponsor’s financial support help us continue to raise funds for scholarships and allows us the opportunity to host community programs such as: Local Government in the Class Room; 5th Grade Student Scholar of the Year; 8th grader Scholar of the Month; and our Senior Citizen’s Support Squad. Furthermore, they allow us to continue our voter registration outreach efforts and continue our community activism on issues that matter to Webb County residents: civic participation, civil rights, economic development, education, health, housing, immigration, leadership, public service, technology, women, youth, young adults, and the 50+ demographic.
We respectfully ask that you consider being a proud “Amigo(a) de LULAC.” As an Amigo(a) de LULAC your contribution will be earmarked for Scholarships and matched 60% by the LULAC National Education Service Center (LNESC) who along with LULAC Councils across the nation have awarded nearly $27 million in scholarships. Your Amigo(a) de LULAC contribution will not only be matched but will also have earmarked scholarships awards on your behalf.
Additionally as an Amigo(a) de LULAC your business/organization will also be featured on our social media platforms; our website and will be displayed on our scholarship distribution letters and award ceremonies. Should you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at 956-251-0802.
